Summit Heroes ProgramA Community of Care for Veterans, Military, & Families
SummitBHC recognizes that our veterans, active military personnel, and their family members (VMF) are the backbone of our country. We also understand the long-lasting effects that the stress of military service has on the people who have served. Stress, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and addiction rates have climbed in recent years for this population. While substance use and mental health treatment options are available, many military members don’t seek help because they feel it’s a sign of weakness or they don’t feel confident that their unique situations can be addressed in a civilian treatment center.
That’s where the Summit Heroes Program comes in. We have recently established the first-of-its-kind partnership with PsychArmor to certify each of our 18 facilities with special education programs that will also us to address the unique needs of the VMF population. PsychArmor is a national nonprofit organization that offers critical resources to Americans so they can effectively engage with and support military service members, Veterans, and their families.
To earn certification, facility employees complete PsychArmor courses about military culture and veteran-specific topics to help them understand the unique needs of our military, veterans, and their families.
Once treatment at a SummitBHC facility is complete, our alumni programs will place the VMF clients with ongoing, VMF-appropriate resources programs in their hometown that will continue to support their needs for a lifetime.
SummitBHC decided to create this program because we realize because too few addiction and mental health centers are qualified in understanding and treating this heroic culture. Far too often, this group of heroes do not receive the level of treatment they deserve from people who understand a warrior and their family’s training. It makes it almost impossible for them to accept treatment in a conventional setting.
Currently, Great Oaks Recovery Center near Houston, Texas, is already a PsychArmor certified facility. Staff at the following facilities are currently being trained by PsychArmor and will be certified in the coming months:
- Canyon Vista Recovery Center (Mesa, Arizona)
- Valley Recovery Center (Sacramento, California)
- Willingway (Statesboro, Georgia)
- Safe Harbor Recovery Center (Portsmouth, Virginia)
- Mountain Laurel Recovery Center (Westfield, Pennsylvania)
Our goal is to have all 18 of our facilities certified by the end of 2020. This will enable us to serve the VMF population across the country.
